What is bone grafting?

Bone grafting is a standard dental procedure used to replace or restore bone in the mouth with insufficient bone tissue to support dental implants or other oral devices. A dental bone graft can be a support to treat several dental problems, including tooth loss and gum disease.

How do bone grafts work?

Bone grafting is a surgical procedure that replaces missing bone with either transplanted bone or synthetic bone graft material to strengthen the jaw bone. The bone used for the graft can come from either the patient’s own body or from a donor with human bone. Synthetic bone grafts are made from artificial materials that support bone growth.

The Procedure

The replacement material is placed in areas where the natural bone is missing or where bone tissue needs to be repaired during the bone grafting procedure. The bone graft will then grow and fuse with the existing bone. The surgery is performed by making an incision in the gum tissue to expose the bone. The bone substitute is then placed into the exposed area and secured with screws or plates. The gums are then sutured closed. The surgery usually takes about two hours to complete. Once the bone graft has fused with the existing bone, it will provide support and strength to the repaired area. This will help reduce the risk of future fractures or broken bones.

After the Procedure

After the procedure, patients may feel swelling and bruising in the treated area. Pain is controlled with medication. Most patients will need to take it easy for a few days after surgery and avoid strenuous activity. Following your dentist’s instructions is essential to ensure proper healing. When bone grafting procedures are combined with other oral surgeries like dental implants, there is usually a waiting period of several months, while bone healing takes place before the additional surgery can be performed.

Who needs bone grafts?

The most common reason a patient needs bone grafting is to prepare the mouth for dental implants. When a tooth is extracted, the bone that supported the tooth begins to degrade. For an implant to be successful, there needs to be enough bone to support it. Bone graft material serves as a support for the artificial tooth. A bone graft can also be used to build up bone that has been lost due to periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection that breaks down the bone and tissue that support the teeth. In severe cases, bone loss can be so significant that it leads to tooth loss.

How painful is a bone graft?

Thanks to advances in pain management techniques, most people experience little pain after their procedure. If anything, bone graft pain results from inflammation and swelling at the graft site. This can be exacerbated by chewing or brushing, putting pressure on the gums, and irritating the bone.
