What are dental veneers?

A dental veneer is a thin, custom-made shell of a ceramic material designed to cover a natural tooth’s front surface. They are an ideal solution for improving the appearance of your smile and can be used to correct a wide variety of cosmetic dental issues, such as:

  • gaps between teeth
  • misshapen or chipped teeth
  • stained or discolored natural tooth enamel
  • misaligned or crooked teeth

Porcelain dental veneers are an extremely popular choice for many people because they offer several advantages, including:

Natural-Looking Results

Porcelain veneers are designed to match your existing teeth’ natural tooth color, shape, and size, so they blend in seamlessly with your smile.

Longevity and Durability

Porcelain veneers are strong and durable and, with proper care, can last for many years.

Minimal Invasiveness

Compared to other cosmetic dental procedures, porcelain veneers are minimally invasive and can be completed in as little as two visits to our office.

If you’re interested in learning more about porcelain veneers or if you think they may be right for you, we invite you to contact us today to schedule a consultation. Our experienced and friendly team will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have.

Porcelain vs. Ceramic or Composite Veneers

Porcelain is the most popular choice for veneers because it looks natural and closely resembles the appearance of your natural teeth. Porcelain is also solid and durable and can last for many years with proper care.

Other materials that can be used for veneers include composite resin and ceramic. Composite resin veneers are made of a plastic composite material that can be easily stained, and ceramic veneers are not as strong or durable as porcelain.

The Dental Veneer Procedure

The porcelain veneers procedure is typically completed in two visits to our office. We will assess your individual needs and goals during your initial consultation to determine if veneers are right for you. If we decide that veneers are the best option, we will take impressions of your teeth and send them to a dental laboratory where your custom veneers will be made. Temporary veneers may be added at this time to protect tooth enamel.

Once your permanent veneers are ready, you will come back to our office for a second appointment. We will remove a thin layer of enamel from your natural teeth during this appointment to prepare them for the veneers. Once your teeth are ready, we will bond the veneers to your teeth using special dental cement.

Aftercare

After the procedure is complete, you will need to take care of your veneers just like your natural teeth. Be sure to continue teeth brushing and flossing regularly and see us for regular checkups and cleanings. With proper dental care, your veneers can last for many years.

Occasionally, a porcelain veneer may become loose or come off ultimately. If this happens, contact your dentist right away so the veneer can be reattached or replaced as soon as possible.
