You are in good hands with our highly skilled oral and maxillofacial surgeons!
Oral and maxillofacial surgery is a broad term that covers a wide range of procedures that are sometimes necessary to preserve or enhance your long-term oral health. Oral surgery or reconstructive surgery may include extracting teeth or repairing damage after an injury. Oral surgery may also be used to biopsy tissue, place dental implants, or treat TMJ disorders. Many people have anxiety related to dental care and dental surgery procedures, so it is our top priority at Tencza & Pugliese Dental to ensure our patients are comfortable, safe, and educated regarding all dental procedures.
Extractions
Extraction, or teeth removal, is typically a last resort after all other options have been exhausted. We only recommend surgically extracting if it’s absolutely necessary to protect your oral health. Extractions can be performed by a dentist or an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. In some cases, a tooth may need to be removed because it’s severely decayed or damaged, causing pain or infection. Tooth removal may also be necessary before another procedure, such as starting orthodontic treatment or getting dentures.
Root Canal
Root canals are one of the most common dental procedures performed by oral surgeons and are usually performed to save a tooth that has been severely damaged by tooth decay or infection. During root canal surgery, the damaged dental pulp (nerves and blood vessels) inside the tooth is removed, and the tooth is cleaned. The tooth is then sealed to prevent future infection.
Bone Grafting
Bone grafting is a surgical procedure performed to repair damage or deformities. For example, a bone graft could be required to rebuild lost bone due to injury, disease, or tooth loss. It may also be used to build up jawbones in preparation for dental implants.
Implants
Dental implants are a permanent solution to tooth loss. A small metal post is surgically placed in the jawbone to act as a replacement for the missing tooth root. Once the metal post has bonded with the bone, a custom-made artificial tooth (crown) is attached to the metal post. Using an implant is based on the underlying bone structure and the soft tissues currently existing.
Porcelain Bridges
A porcelain bridge is a dental appliance used to replace one or more missing teeth. A bridge comprises two crowns (artificial teeth) attached to the neighboring teeth on either side of the gap. A false tooth (pontic) is then placed in the middle to fill the space. Bridges can be an implant-supported prosthesis or attached to existing teeth.
All-on-4 Implants
All-on-4 implants are dental implants used to replace an entire arch of missing teeth (upper or lower) typically caused by facial trauma. Rather than placing one implant for each tooth, All-on-4 implants use four implants placed in the corners of the mouth to support a complete set of artificial teeth. This procedure is typically recommended for patients who are missing all of their teeth or have severe damage to their teeth. In addition, all-on-4 implants provide a stronger foundation for artificial teeth and can be placed in patients who have lost bone due to disease or injury.
