Why You Might Need a Tooth Extraction

Having a tooth extracted is considered when the tooth can be detrimental to your dental health. Reasons for tooth extraction include:

Impacted Teeth

Teeth that have not erupted from the gum line may need to be extracted.

Overcrowding

Teeth that are not in the proper position may need to be removed to make room for other teeth, restorations, or oral appliances such as braces.

Severely Infected Teeth

Teeth that have an infection spread to the surrounding tissue may need to be removed.

Teeth that are Broken

Teeth that are fractured may need to be extracted. We will always ensure that your oral health and budget are our top priority. Contact us today to learn more about our tooth extraction services and how we can help you achieve optimal dental health.

What to Expect During a Tooth Extraction

The procedure is usually quick and easy and can be done in our dentist’s office. However, if we need to refer you to a specialist for more complex cases, we will make sure you’re comfortable and have all the information you need before deciding. First, the area around the tooth will be numbed with local anesthesia, which will help ensure that you are comfortable. Next, our dentist will loosen the tooth with an elevator instrument. The tooth will then be removed with forceps. If the tooth is impacted or severely damaged, it may need to be removed in sections. The dentist will make a small incision in the gum to access the tooth and remove it in pieces. After the tooth has been removed, a gauze pad will be placed over the empty socket to help stop bleeding. You may need to bite down on the gauze. You may experience some discomfort and swelling after the procedure, but this can be alleviated with over-the-counter pain medication. It is also essential to avoid using a straw, smoking, or drinking hot beverages for the first 24 hours after the extraction. We will schedule you a follow-up appointment to ensure that the extraction site is healing properly.

Can you replace missing teeth that have been extracted with dental implants?

Dental implants are a great way to replace missing teeth. They are the only way to replace a tooth both cosmetically and functionally. Whether it is one tooth or multiple teeth, a dental implant can be used to replace teeth that have been extracted. The first step is to consult with our oral surgeon to see if you are a candidate for dental implants. If you are, the next step is to have the implant placed. Once the implant has healed, you will have a crown placed on top of the implant. This will give you a new tooth that looks and functions just like your natural teeth.
